The Nation’s Report Card for 8th Grade Science; 12th Grade Math and Reading to Be Released on September 9; First NAEP Results for these Assessments Since 2019
First insights about science learning and high school student achievement since the pandemic
(Washington, D.C., Aug. 1, 2025) The National Assessment Governing Board (Governing Board) announced today that the 2024 Nation’s Report Card for science in grade 8 and the Nation’s Report Card for math and reading in grade 12 will be released on September 9, 2025.
The Nation’s Report Card, also known as the National Assessment of Educational Progress, or NAEP, will present national science scores overall, along with trends in three content areas: Physical Science, Life Science, and Earth and Space Sciences.
The Nation’s Report Card for math and reading in grade 12 will be released on the same day.
Both these 2024 report cards provide national data and present the first looks at learning in science (grade 8) and in reading and mathematics (grade 12) since the pandemic disrupted schooling. The 2024 NAEP reading and math results for grades 4 and 8 were released in January 2025.
Results will be available to the public on September 9, at 12:01 AM ET at www.nationsreportcard.gov.
“It's essential for policymakers, educators, and parents to get robust data that tells us how students are doing in these critical subjects and grades," said Beverly Perdue, National Assessment Governing Board chair and former North Carolina governor. "Do middle school students have the science skills and knowledge they need to take advanced coursework in high school? Are the nation's 12th graders prepared for what comes after graduation, whether they're going to college, training or apprenticeship programs, or directly into the workforce? Data from NAEP that will be released in September will help answer these questions,” continued Gov. Perdue.
The independent, nonpartisan 26-member Governing Board was established by Congress to set policy for The Nation's Report Card. The Governing Board decides what grades and subjects to assess, determines the content to include, and sets the NAEP achievement levels. It works with the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), which administers NAEP, to release and disseminate results.
