NAEP Long-Term Trend

Long-Term Trend (LTT) has provided a national snapshot on student learning in math and reading among 9- and 13-year-olds since the 1970's. LTT is different from main NAEP as it is a national, age-based, rather than grade-based, assessment of fundamental skills.

Most recent findings from the assessment include:

9-Year-Olds

  • Average scores for 9-year-olds in 2025 increased by 4 points in both math and reading compared to 2022, the last time these tests were administered.
  • Lower-performing students also saw gains in both subjects, while higher-performing students did not see significant score changes in 2025.
  • Average math scores for 9-year-olds are down compared to scores in 2020 and 2012.

13-Year-Olds

  • Average scores for 13-year-olds remain unchanged in math and reading from 2023, the last time this age-group took LTT.
  • In both subjects, average scores for 13-year-olds remain lower than they were in 2020 and 2012.

Survey Findings

  • The percentage of 9-year-olds who report reading for fun almost every day is down to 37 percent, well below the 53 percent of 9-year-olds who said they read for fun almost every day in 1984.
  • In math, just 23 percent of 13-year-olds reported taking algebra in 2025, below the 34 percent taking algebra in 2012.
