NAEP Long Term Trend

Long-Term Trend (LTT) has provided a national snapshot on student learning in math and reading since the 1970’s.

LTT was last released in 2022 for 9-year-olds and in 2023 for 13-year-olds. 

Most recent findings from the assessment include:

9 Year Olds

  • In reading, scores for 9-year-olds declined 5 points since the previous assessment in 2020, but were 7 points higher than the earliest assessments in 1971.
  • In math, scores for 9-year-olds declined 7 points since the previous assessment in 2020, but were 15 points higher than the earliest assessment in 1973.

13 Year Olds

  • Reading scores for 13-year-olds were 4 points lower than in 2020 and not statistically different from scores in 1971.
  • Math scores for 13-year-olds were 9 points lower than in 2020 and 5 points higher than in 1973.

Survey Findings

  • The percentage of 13-year-olds who said they read for fun was lower than ever previously reported.
  • Just 14 percent of students reported that they read for fun almost daily, down 3 percentage points from 2020 and 13 percentage points from 2012.
