NAEP Study of First-Year Texas Postsecondary Students 2010 Pilot Test: Summary of Findings and Lessons Learned Report

This report presents lessons learned from a 2010 study to evaluate the feasibility of administering the 12th grade NAEP reading and math assessments to college freshman at nine Texas colleges to establish reference points for academic preparedness on the NAEP score scale.

Early in the fall semester of 2010, nine public colleges and universities in Texas participated in a pilot study designed to evaluate the operational feasibility of administering the 12th grade NAEP reading and math assessments to incoming first-year postsecondary students. Given the research objectives and sampling requirements for a large scale, statewide administration of the NAEP assessments to first-year postsecondary students in Texas, the NAEP Alliance (ETS, Westat and Pearson) has recommended against proceeding with the planned main study unless significant enhancements are made to support higher response rates.
