Mark Miller is a National Board-Certified Teacher in mathematics with a specialization in early adolescence and a Colorado Master Teacher. He teaches 7th and 8th grade math and serves as the Math Department Chair at Cheyenne Mountain Junior High School in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he has taught since 2000. In this role, he designs the school's student math placement process, leads common assessment development across the department, and partners with elementary and high school teachers to align curriculum.
Mr. Miller currently serves on the Board of Directors of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, where he co-chairs the Certification Council. He is a member of Colorado Math Leaders and the Educational Preparation Innovation Council at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. He also served on the Colorado Department of Education's CMAS Range Finding Committee and Math Data Review Committee. With the U.S. Department of Education, he has served as co-chair of the Mathematics Community of Practice for the Regional Educational Laboratory–Central Region, as a member of the Regional Advisory Committee for the Central Region, and as the 8th grade representative on the National Assessment Governing Board from 2018-2022, where he served on the Executive Committee and as Vice Chair of the Assessment Development Committee.
Mr. Miller is a two-time nominee for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching and a 2024 Colorado Teacher of the Year nominee. In February 2024, he was named KOAA News Colorado Springs Teacher of the Month. He has presented at national and state conferences, including the 2023 IES Math Summit, the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics Conference, the Colorado Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and the Colorado NBCT Summit. Mark's writing on math education has appeared in Education Week, Edutopia, and the Colorado Springs Gazette, and he has been quoted in Chalkbeat and the Wall Street Journal on national math achievement trends.
